This guides covers adding one or more internal domains or subdomains. An internal domain is a domain owned or controlled by your organization. At least one internal domain was added when your Mimecast service was set up.

 

Applies To...

 

  • Administrators looking to register additional internal domains.
  • Administrators looking to add a subdomain to a previously added internal domain.

 

What You'll Need

 

  • An administrator account with edit permissions to the Administration | Directories | Internal Directories menu of the Administration Console.
  • Access to the control panel for the DNS zone of the domain you want to register.

 

Walkthrough

 

To add an internal domain:

  1. Log in to the Administration Console.
  2. Click on the Administration toolbar button. A menu drop down is displayed.
  3. Click on the Directories | Internal Directories menu item.
  4. Click on the Register New Domain button.

    Register Internal Domain

 

A domain registration wizard is displayed, to guide you through verifying the domain's ownership. This requires you to follow the steps below:

  • Entering the domain
  • Adding a DNS record
  • Validating the domain

 

Entering the Domain

 

Step 1: Entering the DomainThe "Enter Domain" step is the first step in the wizard. It requires you to enter the internal domain name, and get a verification code.

 

To enter a domain:

  1. Type the domain in the Domain Name field.
    The domain must not be registered in your, or any other Mimecast customer's, account.
  2. Click on the Get Validation Code button. A verification code is displayed in the second step of the wizard.

 

Adding a DNS Record

 

The "Add DNS Record" step is the second step in the wizard. It requires you to select the DNS record type, create a DNS record in the control panel for the domain's DNS zone, and verify it.

 

To add a DNS record:

  1. Step 2: Adding an Internal DomainSelect either:
  2. Log in to your DNS domain registrar’s website or portal.
  3. Create either a:
    • DNS TXT Record:
      1. Create a DNS TXT Record on your domain registrar in the domain's zone.
      2. Type @ into the Host field.
      3. Paste the verification code into the DNS TXT record.
      4. Save the changes.
    • DNS CNAME Record: 
      1. Create a DNS CNAME Record on your domain registrar in the domain's zone.
      2. Paste the verification code into the Host field.
      3. Point the host to validate-domain.mimecast.com.
      4. Save the changes.
  4. Return to Step Two of the Register New Domain wizard in the Administration Console.
  5. Click on the Validate button.

 

Validated Domains

 

The "Validated Domain" step is the last step in the wizard. It requires you to select which inbound checks are used for the domain. It also provides advice on entering subdomains should these be required.


To validate the domain:

  1. Step 3: Validated DomainsSelect the Automatically Create Anti-Spoofing Policy for this Domain option. 

    This is not compulsory, but is recommended to prevent spoofing messages from the domain.

         
  2. Select the Inbound Checks you want to use for messages received from an external sender in the drop down.
  3. Click on the Finish button.

 

Validation Issues

 

Your DNS system needs to be up to date before the validation can be successful. Typically this is an instant process, but can take up to two hours. Should your domain validation fail, wait a few minutes, and try the validation again. You can click on the Go Back button to continue working in the Administration Console whilst you wait.

 

To retry a domain verification:

  1. Log in to the Administration Console.
  2. Click on the Administration toolbar button. A menu drop down is displayed.
  3. Click on the Directories | Internal Directories menu item.
  4. If required, click on the View | Pending Domains menu item to view only your pending domains.
  5. Click on the Validate button for the pending domain.
Pending domains have an expiry date of 30 days. If the expiry date passes, you'll need to restart the verification process.

To remove a pending domain verification:

  1. Right click on the domain.
  2. Click on the Remove Register Domain menu item.

 

Adding an Internal Subdomain

 

Once an internal domain has been validated, you can add one or more subdomains. You don't have to register or validate subdomains.

 

To add one or more subdomains:

  1. Log in to the Administration Console.
  2. Click on the Administration toolbar button. A menu drop down is displayed.
  3. Click on the Directories | Internal Directories menu item.
  4. Click on the Add Subdomain button.

    Add Sub-Domain
  5. Complete the dialog as follows:

    Field / OptionDescription
    Domain Name(s)Enter up to 100 subdomains, with each subdomain on a separate line.
    Inbound ChecksSelect the inbound checks to be performed on all external messages directed to the subdomain(s).
    Add Anti-Spoofing PolicyIf selected, Anti-Spoofing Policies are applied to all messages directed to the subdomains. This prevents them from being spoofed from outside sources.
  6. Click on the Save and Exit button.
