Mimecast's security systems include multiple scanning engines for spam and viruses. These scans are applied to all emails received by Mimecast. The Anti Virus (AV) Scan on Release policies rescan any held email that has been released by either the Administrator or a user.

The AV Scan on Release Policy is only available to customers utilizing our latest email Gateway.


With the continuous development of new malware, it is helpful to allow for appropriate counter measures to be prepared in order to identify these new threats. In some instances where emails are held, the lead time generated before the message is released from the held queue may enable new scan definition development. This may improve the effectiveness of the anti virus scans performed on the email. This means that held emails that are released, are re-scanned with the latest scan definitions.

What you need

  • An Administrator Console logon with access to the Administration Gateway | Policies menu item.

Creating a policy


To create a policy, follow the instructions in the Creating / Changing a Policy article, but using the following options:


Policy NarrativeProvide a description for the Policy to allow you to easily identify it in the future.
Select Option

Select to enable or disable AV rescanning for released emails from the Held queue.
